Recent Extreme Floods and Their Transformation Along the Danube River

Abstract

The article discusses the considerable changes in meteorological conditions and hydrological regime in the Danube River basin over the period from the late 20th century to the early 21st century. Particular attention is given to the recent extreme hydrological events in the Danube River basin: the disastrous rainfall flood that occurred in August 2002, and the extremely high spring–summer floods in 2006 and 2010. Specific features in the development and transformation of flood waves along the Danube River are discussed in detail, including the impact of the Iron Gate I Reservoir on these processes. In addition, the influence of the backwater effect of the Black Sea was evaluated, and probabilities of extreme floods were approximately estimated.
