N. spumigena is the dominant cyanobacterial species found in Baltic Sea. It forms extensive bloom in late summer in areas of the Baltic Sea with high phosphorus concentrations and moderate salinity. Both environmental and manmade factors are involved with bloom formation. This review also elucidates the physiological and molecular aspects of nitrogen fixation, heterocyst formation and nodularin production in N. spumigena.
